A young teenage girl named Miaka and her friend Yui go to the library one day after school. And while Yui was doing her own thing, Miaka was thirsty and was going to get a drink. As she did, she saw a red bird, a phoenix. She followed its trail where she came upon a book. Yui and Miaka sat and read a little bit, trying to understand what the book was talking about. Then suddenly Miaka and Yui are transported into another world (Ancient China).
